Within the frame of the EACWP Teachers Interchange Program, poet and teacher Gale Burns (Kingston University) has been invited by Escuela de Escritores (Madrid) to impart a two days workshop based on the contemporary English poetry craft, tecniques and artistry applied to all kind of vocational writing genres. What can poetry do for your prose? This course aims to improve the development and evolution of your writing through the exploration and knowledge of contemporary English poetry. Although poetry will be used as a trigger of the writing process , it is not a course designed exclusively for poets but for any writer who wants to experiment with rhythm and language plasticity.

Gale Burns proposes the revision of contemporary poetry texts in English and a multitude of exercises based on those texts to encourage students to experiment with their own writing. The course will be in English , however, participants may write their texts both in English and Spanish.

Course operation

The course is held at the headquarters of Escuela de Escritores (C/ Covarrubias, 1) in Madrid, thanks to the EACWP Teachers Interchange Program. The class will be taught in English, although a basic level of English understanding in enough for students in order to attend the workshop.


Thursday 21 and Friday 22 of April, 2016.

About Gale Burns


is a poet, writer and professor of creative writing. He has taught in the MA and MFA in Creative Writing at Kingston University in London, and has also participated as a resident writer in the Sydenham Arts Festival. He organizes in London the poetry series. Many of his works have been published. His collection, Flipped Eye, has been translated into French (in a literary magazine of the University of the Sorbonne), Arabic and Slovak. Kingston University and its Creative Writing program is part of the European Association of Creative Writing Programs (EACWP) since 2013. Gale Burns is an active member of the EACWP Teacher Interchange Program, which has enabled pedagogical cooperations with other colleagues who have been recently invited to Escuela de Escritores such as Reijo  Virtanen and Risto Athi (Orivesi College of Arts / Finland), Juergen Berlakovich (Vienna Poetry School / Austria) or Luca Scarlini (Scuola Holden / Italy).
