Last call for proposals | EACWP Conference

From September, 13 to September, 15 (2018) our partners from Creatief Schrijven will host  in Brussels the V EACWP International Pedagogical Conference. The  call for papers is extended for worldwide participants until June, 15 (2018)

Creatief Schrijven (Belgium) organizes in co-operation with European Association of Creative Writing Programs (EACWP) an international conference on creative writing. The theme will be “Out of the box”. A new trend has arised. Writing courses are no longer restricted to the classroom. Teachers use new technology and resort to new places to stimulate their audiences. In addition, alternatives are being sought for traditional teaching methods. They also regularly opt to engage in crossovers and involve other art disciplines.

If you have a workshop or seminar which you would love to show to a broader international audience then definitely send your proposal before June 15 to David Troch (at david@creatiefschrijven.be). We would like to receive the following information:

  • The title of your seminar or workshop.
  • A short description of approximately 10 lines.
  • The language (English, French, Dutch) in which you would prefer to perform the seminar or workshop.
  • Lecturer’s name, institutional affiliation, email address and mobile number.

Please keep in mind that the duration of lectures will be 30 minutes. Workshops are one and a half hour. Depending on your input we will perfect the schedule.

  • Acceptances of papers will be sent out by 20th June 2018.
  • Official Conference language: English
  • Conference facilities: Conference sessions will take place at deBuren, Leopoldstraat 6, 1000 Brussels, Belgium.

Aims of the Conference

The main aims of the conferences are:

  • To create an exchange of best practices and didactical methodologies among different stakeholders involved in creative writing (teachers, schools, educational system).
  • To create a network of interesting ideas and contacts.
  • To stimulate the imagination and launch some pedagogical proposals and challenges connected to creative writing.

We want to develop the Conference through different kind of activities that will be
performed along the two days of the Conference.

Main structure of the Conference

The Conference will be structured around five main subjects:

  1. Love of Learning
  2. Creative Writing Workshops
  3. From story to dialogue
  4. Skip intro digital writing
  5. Story Box

LOVE OF LEARNING: The mission of teachers is to awaken, enliven, nurture and sustain the natural love of learning in students of all ages. They seek to encourage and cultivate the powers of critical thought, imagination, curiosity, innate sense of purpose, wonder and inspiration. How do you inspire students who want to learn creative writing? What are your strengths as a teacher or writing coach? Every participant (schools, individuals) will have one hour to tell about his own pedagogical method. Creatief Schrijven wil focus in two sessions on new teaching methodologies (Universal Design of Learning, self-determination theory, …) and group dynamics.

CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOPS: There will be different workshops running in parallel. The workshops will run in the morning (10:00 – 11:30 and 11:45 – 13:15) and in the afternoon (14:30 – 16:15) from the 14th to the 15th September.

FROM STORY TO DIALOGUE: Each person has his or her own story. When you bring people together, each story is important and can be the start for a dialogue. We share good practices about writing projects with, for example, detainees, youth, immigrants, refugees, older people… Every participant (schools, individuals) will have 15 minutes during a round table discussion to tell about an inspiring project.

SKIP INTRO – DIGITAL WRITING: Stories are linear. First the beginning, then the middle and so to the end. But in a digital world that rule is under pressure. Does technology influence your position as an author? How do you involve the reader? Can text-based stories survive online? Or do only images play the main role? What is the influence of the internet on the art of storytelling? This is an invitation to answer this question. In these sessions we talk about online courses, writing for games, virtual reality, and so on. Every participant (schools, individuals) will have half an hour to tell about digital writing.

STORY BOX: How can we, as writers, change Europe and make it a better place? There is a lot of research about the power of reading. But what about the power or impact of creative writing? What are the most important benefits of writing? This is an invitation – but also a challenge – to answer this question. We would love it if you could give a contribution with a story of your own, that you can deliver by filming a video, by writing a tale, by giving an interview or in any other way that comes to your mind and that you are comfortable with.

Fees and Accomodation

The fee will not include any cost of accommodation:

  • Fee for EACWP and NAWE members: 40 euros (1 day), 80 euros (2 days)
  • Fee for general public: 70 euros (1 day), 120 euros (2 days)

If you don´t live in Brussels, as this conference is an ideal opportunity to expand your network and learn from and get inspirered by others, Creatief Schrijven has chosen to locate the creative hub at Sleepwell Hostel. The fee for each night there are 30,50 euro/night of 40,50 euro/night (single room). This way you can easily meet with and talk to other participants before or after the conference.

We would like to recommend another interesting conference Monday 17th of September in Brussels, organised by Flanders Literature. This event focuses on structural changes in the literature and book sector with the aim of more inclusion. The program consists of international keynotes in the morning and a workshop in the afternoon. More info about this conference will soon be provided.
