The Creative Writing Minor is open to all students on a first-come, first-served basis. Because we want to make the courses available to students from diverse disciplines, the first two classes of the minor focus heavily on reading. Exercises will be aimed at providing a conceptual and historical understanding of fiction. Students will focus on their own writing in the last class in period 3. Classes meet twice a week and contain no more than 15 students.
The minor consists of 30 credits, divided among three periods: Period 1 will be a 12-credit course, “Reading Like a Writer”; Period 2 will be a 12-credit course, “Your First Story” and Period 3 will be a 6-credit writing-intensive skills class that will allow students to put into practice what they learned the first two periods. For this skills class, students will be able to choose among three concentrations: translation, poetry and short story.
