At Artists and Poets, an exhibition currently on show at The Secession in Vienna until 12 April, curator Ugo Rondinone (SUI) shows an adaptation of American performance artist and poet John Giorno’s poetry installation Dial-A-Poem: in collaboration with the Vienna Poetry School (schule für dichtung, sfd)
The Artists and Poets exhibition was inaugurated on the 12th of February and its features an unusual “telephone service”: recordings of 30 poems, written and spoken by Austrian writers and curated by Fritz Ostermayer & the Vienna Poetry School:
Ann Cotten, Christian Ide Hintze (sfd-founder), Ernst Jandl, Franz Josef Czernin, Liesl Ujvari, Christoph W. Bauer, elffriede.aufzeichnensysteme, Gerhard Rühm, Jürgen Berlakovich, Christine Huber, Gerhard Ruiss, H.C. Artmann, Heidi Pataki, Maja Haderlap, Martin Fritz, Christian Loidl, Friedericke Mayröcker, Judith Nika Pfeifer, Zuzana Husárová, Robert Schindl, Ferdinand Schmatz, Franzobel, Hubert Weinheimer, Ingeborg Bachmann, Rosa Pock, Bodo Hell, Elfriede Gerstl, Reinhard Priessnitz, Sophie Reyer and Wolfgang Bauer.
Artists and Poets is Rondinone’s third exhibition dedicated to a wide-ranging exploration of the relationship between visual art and lyric poetry and the articulation of his conviction that the arts possess a spiritual and transcendental power. Also, Rondinone believes that creativity, whether it takes the form of a poem, a sculpture, or a painting, can affect us deeply.
With Artists and poets, Rondinone also refers to a local context, because –from 1986 to 1990– he studied at Vienna’s University for Applied Arts and therefore has a special connection to the city. Likewise, the poetry installation Dial-a-poem by us-performance artist and poet John Giorno is being adapted for the exhibition.
Since its opening, visitors may listen to Dial-A-Poem also by calling the Vienna landline number +43 (0)1 585 04 33!
Addtitionally, on the first day of the exhibition on 12 February, the Vienna Poetry School organised performances of ten poets (each lasting ten minutes) at Vienna Secession: Ann Cotten, elffriede.aufzeichnensysteme, Zuzana Husárová, Markus Köhle, Barbi Marković, Jörg Piringer, Konrad Prissnitz, Sophie Reyer, sfd’s Fritz Ostermayer and John Giorno.
